A popular relaxed and unpretentious affair, the Edinburgh Castle does bands on a dedicated stage as well as a largeish beer garden. A large range of countries are on offer as far as beer goes and expect to see beer being served by the jug, share plates and great live music.
UHB is getting everything right from the great draught beer, interesting food priced perfectly, and a feel that encourages families to come and share a communal venue.
The bar is old fashioned, straight out of the 60’s, and is easy to sit at while completing your cryptic – at least 3 people were attempting a palindrome in Eden (answer: Eve, the only cryptic clue I have solved) as the recorded music played in the background.
A small stage for live music, a regular feature at the Union, a smaller ante room (space for 10 or so to dine) a larger dining room for the masses, with sufficient kitsch dotted around the pub sets it up comfortably.
The beer garden is smallish, with shed like shelter. Table service, yep, and that inexact component of hospitality – ambience – is in abundance.
The food, a mix of traditional, with a surprise or two. All tastes are catered for, with mains priced in the high teens-low 20s.

The front bar is nothing to phone home to mum about. It’s just your classic, small-ish, social drinking area, main bar to one side, and some bar stools and round pub tables.

Down amongst the Tigersnakes by the Yarra river is the Abbotsford Convent. Built one hundred years ago by the Order of Good Shepherd to provide shelter and spiritual support for vulnerable girls and women, it is slowly being turned into an arts, cultural and educational precinct. I’m sure the vulnerable girls and women would have preferred art, culture and education to the grinding routine of the Laundry. What has happened to them anyway?
A stunning Melbourne Bar and restaurant on Southbank. Dinner close to Crown and a great Southbank venue to share drink by the Yarra River.
Meat Market South Wharf was inspired by the Australian BBQ, where the grill takes centre stage and the act of cooking is part of the social occasion.
